What to see

  1. #PlazaFrancia is actually called Plaza Intendente Alvear. The confusion of names arose because the craft fair of the 60's was, originally, in Plaza Francia, which is located just across the street, on the other side of Avenida Pueyrredón.
  2. The neighborhood owes its name to the barefoot Recollect friars of the Franciscan Congregation, who settled west of the current #PlazaAlvear. The word refers to the "spiritual recollection" of the monks, but also means "solitary or little-traveled place".
  3. The #IglesiadelPilar, with a 30-meter tower, was inaugurated on October 12, 1732. Who contributed the money for the construction was a neighbor from Zaragoza, on the condition that he worshiped the Virgin of Pilar, very popular in his hometown.
  4. The gomero in front of #LaBiela is the oldest tree in Buenos Aires. At 200 years old, it is more than 7 meters in diameter and its foliage occupies a quarter of a city block.
  5. The #CementeriodelaRecoleta was called, in its beginnings, "Cementerio del Norte". It occupied the space of the old orchard of the Recollects. One of the first people buried there was a freed slave.
  6. The neighborhood took its present appearance in 1871, with the yellow fever epidemic, which devastated the southern areas (Barracas, San Telmo, La Boca). The aristocratic families migrated to the north of the city (Recoleta and Retiro), where they began to build French-style mansions.
  7. It houses one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world: the #AteneoGrandSplendid which, in the past, was an important theater in the city. Today, its boxes and balconies are filled with books, it has an incredible painted dome, and the stage, which retains the original curtain, was transformed into a cafe.
  8. The Monument to Carlos María de Alvear, located in the Plaza Julio de Caro, is right in front of the work that honors his son Torcuato. It is a work of the French sculptor Antoine Bourdelle, disciple of Rodin, and is considered by the author himself as one of his masterpieces.
